Our Schools

Rapid City Area Schools (RCAS) serves approximately 12,000 students and employs about 1,700 staff members. Nearly half of RCAS teachers hold advanced degrees, and the average RCAS teacher has 14.2 years of experience. Our district is rich in diversity, with 21% of students identifying as Native American.

RCAS is the second-largest school district in South Dakota. The district includes 14 elementary schools, one virtual elementary school, five middle schools, one alternative middle school, two comprehensive high schools, one alternative high school, and a virtual high school. The district owns nearly 700 acres of land in and around Rapid City and maintains 30 buildings totaling approximately two million square feet.

Rapid City Area Schools is committed to building tomorrow’s community through inspiration, innovation, and excellence. The district’s strategic planning work focuses on strengthening the community through education, communication, appreciation, and celebration.

RCAS’ strategic plan centers on five key pillars that guide district priorities and decision-making:

  • Students – Creating safe, welcoming schools where every student is valued and prepared with the knowledge and skills needed for future success.

  • Staff – Attracting, recruiting, and retaining high-quality educators and staff who are respected and empowered to support student learning.

  • Community – Building strong partnerships with families, businesses, and community organizations to enhance educational opportunities.

  • Facilities – Ensuring safe, modern, and effective learning environments by maintaining and improving district buildings and infrastructure.

  • Communication – Providing clear, consistent, and transparent communication with students, families, staff, and the community.

Through these strategic priorities, RCAS works to ensure every student receives the support, resources, and opportunities needed to succeed in school and beyond.
